Bellrigg Holiday House

Set amongst the rolling hills of Galloway, Bellrigg is a wonderfully cosy farmhouse, sleeping 11… with views over the fields and to the Dumfriesshire hills, this family home lends itself to family holidays.

WELCOME TO
BELLRIGG

Whether it’s barbeques on the many deserted beaches or staying put enjoying tennis, walks or the fabulous games room. A week at Bellrigg has everything that a typical Cornish holiday could offer but on a quieter scale.

Four miles from the sea, you can choose from the many beaches, bays and islands to explore. Equally, spend a morning browsing the many lovely shops of nearby Castle Douglas. The town, formally titled “The Good Food Town”, offers the best butchers in the area, gift shops, clothes shops, homemade chocolates and plenty of places to enjoy a cup of coffee. By far the dominant town in Galloway, Castle Douglas is a fun buzzing little place, with everything you need for a holiday.

KIRKCUDBRIGHT

The coastline is spectacular. Queen Victoria’s favourite journey was reputably the coastline route from Gatehouse of Fleet to Newton Stewart. For the sailing types, whether you bring your own boat and launch it at the marina at Kippford or Kirkcudbright or enjoy the numerous facilities at the nearby Loch Ken Sailing Centre, it is the ideal holiday. Alternatively, crabbing off the pier at Kirkcudbright, watching the “Queenie” (scallops) fleet (the largest in the country) come in, enjoying the best fish and chips, is fairly dreamy too.

A typical beach holiday may be your thing but this hidden part of Scotland has many other things to offer too.  The area has some of the prettiest lochs tucked away amidst the hills.

Fishing permits are available for the day from both Castle Douglas and Kirkcudbright. Take a picnic into the hills and enjoy a day’s loch fishing. Being close to the sea, it has the added bonus of no midges! A little boat trip to Threave Castle is also fun.

For the keen golfers, Southerness is a fantastic  and the most well-known 18 hole course close by, whilst the prettiest 9 hole course must be Gatehouse of Fleet, with breathtaking views of the hills and out to sea. New Galloway, too, is a close runner-up. These are just some worth mentioning.

DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY

For rainy days, which we all know Scotland can have (though the Gulf Stream and Ireland in-between can lead to considerably more sunshine here than other parts of the country), there are a variety of things to entertain the young. Notably Cream of Galloway – offering fantastic zip wires for all ages through the trees and ice cream making lessons and the Chocolate Factory: workshops mastering the art of making and consuming chocolate! Both are highly recommended to be included in a week’s holiday. They also have good restaurants.

For the more culturally interested, there is much to keep you occupied. Kirkcudbright is the renowned “Artists town”, named due to the spectacular light that has lured painters over the years. The town boasts exhibitions and the Wickerman Festival in August, not to be missed. Wigtown is a  recognised literary centre, Scotland’s Hay-on-Wye. An old fishing port, it offers wonderful bookshops and a Literary Festival. Although 45 minutes from Bellrigg, it is well worth a visit – maybe stop off for a walk along a beach on your way back.

For the more adventurous, and two hours drive, the Edinburgh Festival always beckons and runs for all of August. Alternatively, for a more relaxing day, Bellrigg offers just that – a game of tennis, walks from the house, playing table tennis or billiards or the many other games found in the house. There is plenty to fill a day. Whether washing off the sand from a day on the beach or just winding down at the end of the day with a hot bath and a glass of wine, watching the sun set over the Galloway hills is a tonic in itself.

For the active, there is much to do and explore but, for the quieter, Bellrigg offers a very comfortable, relaxing week in this beautifully decorated family home, much loved by its owners, in this magical unspoilt corner of Scotland.
